About Grade 4 Reading
Grade 4 reading (4th grade, ages 9–10) is 40 lessons in 5 units: Unit 1 — Vocabulary (lessons 1–8), Unit 2 — Comprehension (lessons 9–16), Unit 3 — Nonfiction and Research (lessons 17–24), Unit 4 — Fluency and Performance (lessons 25–32), and finally Unit 5 — Projects and Review (lessons 33–40), project work that brings the year together. Along the way, children learn to identify the central theme of a story from characters' actions and outcomes, identify clues that make an online source reliable or unreliable and identify the emotion or tone of each line of dialogue from context clues.
Start here: Lesson 1: Use Greek and Latin Roots is free to open and print. Every other lesson has a free preview of its mini lesson and vocabulary.
Paper first: each lesson is printed before you call your child. You read it once and talk it through, your child does the exercises on paper, and you correct together with the Parent checklist — about 45 minutes at the table. The next day, a 10-minute screen review of the same lesson.
