Mini Lesson

The end-year showcase is your opportunity to demonstrate everything you have learned in Grade 4 Reading. Across four units, you have developed skills in comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, literary analysis, author study, nonfiction, and creative response. Today you bring it all together.

Unit 1 — Foundations of Reading

  • Comprehension strategies: predicting, questioning, visualizing, summarizing.
  • Main idea and supporting details.
  • Making inferences from explicit and implicit evidence.

Unit 2 — Reading in Depth

  • Author's purpose: to inform, entertain, persuade, or express.
  • Text structure in nonfiction: chronological, compare-and-contrast, cause-and-effect.
  • Point of view: first person, third person limited, third person omniscient.

Unit 3 — Literary Analysis

  • Plot structure: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.
  • Character analysis: motivation, change, and relationship to theme.
  • Theme: identifying and explaining the central message.

Unit 4 — Reading and Performance

  • Fluency: pace, expression, accuracy, and projection.
  • Performance reading: preparing and delivering a text aloud for an audience.
  • Peer feedback: giving and receiving specific, constructive comments.

Vocabulary
inference
A conclusion drawn from evidence in the text combined with your own reasoning.
analysis
A careful examination of a text to understand how and why it works.
theme
The central message or big idea that runs through a text.
fluency
The ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with appropriate expression.
