Mini Lesson
A group reading session works best when it has a clear leader. The leader keeps the group focused, assigns roles, monitors participation, and makes sure everyone gets a chance to contribute. Leading a group is a skill — it takes preparation, confidence, and good listening.
Planning a Group Reading Session
- Choose a suitable text — not too long, at a level that challenges but does not frustrate the group.
- Decide how the reading will be shared: round-robin, popcorn reading, choral reading, or paired reading.
- Assign roles before you begin so everyone knows their job.
- Plan a discussion question for after the reading.
- Set a time limit — keep the session focused and achievable.
Group Roles
- Leader — directs the session, assigns turns, keeps everyone on track.
- Reader — reads their assigned section aloud clearly.
- Word Checker — notes unfamiliar words for discussion.
- Summariser — gives a brief summary after each section is read.
- Encourager — offers positive feedback and keeps the group motivated.
A good leader listens as much as they speak. After each reading turn, pause — give the group a moment to absorb what was read before moving on.
