← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can tell what a map and a globe are and say how both help us find places on the Earth.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What are maps and globes?

We use maps and globes to show places on the Earth.

What is a map?

  • A map is a flat picture of places.
  • It can show roads, parks, and buildings.
  • Colors and small symbols stand for real things.

What is a globe?

  • A globe is a round model of the Earth.
  • It turns and shows the whole world.
  • You can see land and water all around it.

How are maps and globes the same?

  • Both show places on the Earth.
  • Both use colors to show land and water.
  • Both help us find and talk about places.

How are they different?

  • A map is flat.
  • A globe is round.
  • A map may show a small area (your town), but a globe shows the whole Earth.

We use simple words like map, globe, land, water, and place to talk about where things are.

Guided Practice — My map and globe page

You will make a simple page to show a map and a globe.

  1. Split your page into two parts. On the left, write "Map". On the right, write "Globe".
  2. Under Map, draw a small flat map. Show home, school, and one park or shop.
  3. Under Globe, draw a round globe. Color some land green and some water blue.
  4. Under your map, write or trace the sentence "A map is flat."
  5. Under your globe, write or trace the sentence "A globe is round."
  6. At the bottom of the page, add one more sentence such as "Both show places."
  7. Read your page aloud to an adult. Point to the map and globe as you say each sentence.

Practice — Find it on a simple map

This activity uses a picture map to help you talk about places in a simple way.

  1. An adult draws a small neighborhood map on paper. It can show home, school, a park, and one shop or house.
  2. The adult points to one place and asks, "What place is this on the map?" You answer using a full sentence, such as "That is the park."
  3. Take turns asking questions like "Where is the school on the map?" and "Where is the shop?"
  4. Talk about how this map is flat and shows places from above, like a bird looking down.
  5. At the end, say one thing you learned, such as "A map helps me find places."
