Objective

I can tell that the Earth has big land parts called continents and big water parts called oceans.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Big land and big water

The Earth is our home planet. It has land and water.

Continents — big land

  • Very big pieces of land are called continents.
  • They are like big land puzzle pieces on the Earth.
  • People, animals, plants, towns, and cities live on the continents.

Oceans — big water

  • Very big areas of water are called oceans.
  • They are much bigger than seas, lakes, or swimming pools.
  • Fish and many sea animals live in the oceans.

Land and water together

  • On a world map or globe, land is often green or brown.
  • Water is often blue.
  • Continents (land) and oceans (water) fit together all around the Earth.

In this lesson, we do not test you on the names of all continents or oceans. We only learn the idea of big land and big water.

Guided Practice — Colour land and water

You will make a simple Earth picture with continents (land) and oceans (water).

  1. An adult draws a big circle on your page. This is the Earth.
  2. Inside the circle, draw a few big land shapes. They can look like soft puzzle pieces.
  3. Colour the land shapes green or brown.
  4. Colour the water areas blue. This is where the oceans are.
  5. Under the picture, write or trace this sentence: "Continents are big land."
  6. On the next line, write or trace: "Oceans are big water."
  7. Point to the land and water on your picture while you read your sentences aloud to an adult.

Practice — Talk about continents and oceans

Use a world map or globe to talk about big land and big water.

  1. Look at a world map or globe with an adult. Find some big green or brown land areas.
  2. The adult says, "These big land areas are called continents." You repeat the word "continents".
  3. Now find the big blue water areas. The adult says, "These big water areas are called oceans." You repeat the word "oceans".
  4. Take turns saying simple sentences, such as "Continents are big land." and "Oceans are big water."
  5. At the end, tell an adult one thing you learned, such as "The Earth has land and water."
