🟡 SOCIAL STUDIES (40 Lessons)🔵 B. My School and Community

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name some school workers and helpers and talk about how they help our school.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Who helps in our school?

Many people work in a school. They help us stay safe, clean, and ready to learn.

Some school workers and helpers

  • Teacher — helps children learn and listen.
  • Head teacher / principal — helps lead the school.
  • Office staff — answers calls and helps families.
  • Cleaner — keeps rooms and halls clean.
  • Lunch helpers — help with food and lunch time.
  • Playground helpers — watch the yard and help keep it safe.

Kind sentences we can use

  • "Thank you for helping our school."
  • "You help us stay safe and ready to learn."
  • "Every job in school is important."

We do not say that one job is better than another. We show respect to all school workers.

Guided Practice — My school helpers chart

You will make a simple "School helpers" chart to show some workers in your school.

  1. Fold your paper into four boxes or draw four squares.
  2. At the top, write: "School helpers".
  3. In each box, draw one person who helps in your school (for example, teacher, cleaner, office staff, lunch helper).
  4. Under each picture, write or trace a short word such as "teach", "clean", "office", or "lunch".
  5. Practise reading your chart aloud with an adult: "This person helps by ..."

Practice — Thank a school helper

Think about one person who helps in your school and practise kind words you could say.

  1. Choose one school worker or helper from your chart.
  2. Tell an adult one thing this person does that helps the school.
  3. Practise a kind sentence you could say, such as "Thank you for helping us."
  4. If it is safe and allowed, say your kind sentence to that person one day.
  5. On your chart, draw a small heart or star beside that helper.
