Lesson 171: Our community helpers

🟡 SOCIAL STUDIES (40 Lessons)🔵 B. My School and Community

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name some helpers in my community and talk about how they help us in daily life.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Who helps in our community?

A community is the place where we live, learn, and play. Many helpers work in our community.

Some community helpers

  • Doctor — helps people when they are sick or hurt.
  • Nurse — helps care for people's health.
  • Driver — drives buses or other vehicles safely.
  • Shop worker — helps us buy food and things we need.
  • Builder — helps make homes, schools, and roads.
  • Farmer — grows food for people to eat.

Kind sentences we can use

  • "Thank you for helping our community."
  • "Your job helps people in daily life."
  • "Many helpers work together to keep us safe and well."

We do not say that one helper is better than another. We show respect to all people who help.

Guided Practice — Community helpers wheel

You will make a simple "Community helpers" wheel to show people who help in your area.

  1. Draw a big circle. Divide it into four sections like a pizza.
  2. At the top, write: "Community helpers".
  3. In each section, draw one helper (for example, doctor, driver, shop worker, builder, farmer).
  4. Under each picture, write or trace a short helper word such as "doc", "drive", "shop", or "build".
  5. Practise reading your wheel aloud with an adult: "This helper ..."

Practice — Spot the helpers

Think about the helpers you see in your own community. Talk about how they help you and others.

  1. With an adult, name helpers you have seen nearby (for example, driver, shop worker, doctor, farmer).
  2. For each helper, say one thing they do that helps people.
  3. Practise a kind sentence you could say, such as "Thank you for helping us."
  4. On your wheel or chart, draw a small heart or star near a helper you would like to thank.
  5. Tell an adult which helper you would like to learn more about.
