Mini Lesson

Focus is the skill of putting your full attention on one thing for a chunk of time. Distractions are everywhere — phones, tabs, noise, random thoughts — so focus has to be protected on purpose. The good news: focus is a skill, and a few simple techniques and habits make it much stronger.

Focus Is a Skill You Train

Your brain only really focuses on one thing at a time. "Multitasking" is just switching fast — and every switch costs energy and time. Single-tasking finishes work faster and with fewer mistakes.

  • Focus = full attention on ONE task at a time.
  • Distraction = anything that pulls your attention off that task.
  • Habit = something you do almost automatically, every day.
  • Strong focus comes from good techniques + daily habits.

Simple Techniques That Work

  1. Single-task — one task on screen, one task on paper.
  2. Phone away — out of reach, not just face down.
  3. Pomodoro 25/5 — 25 minutes of focus, then a 5-minute break.
  4. Clear next step — write the very next thing to do.
  5. Same place, same time — let your brain expect to focus.

Habits Build Attention Over Time

  • A clear desk and a closed door tell your brain: focus mode.
  • Short breaks protect attention — they do not waste it.
  • Notifications off during a focus block — every ping is a switch.
  • A water bottle nearby beats getting up every five minutes.

💡

Tip: before you start a focus block, write the ONE thing you want done by the end. A clear target makes the 25 minutes much easier to protect.
