Mini Lesson

Punctuation marks are not just grammar rules — they are voice instructions. When you read aloud, every comma, period, dash, and ellipsis tells your voice exactly what to do. Learning to follow these cues makes your reading sound natural, clear, and expressive.

Punctuation That Means: Read with a Pause

  • Period (.) — stop completely. Take a breath before the next sentence.
  • Comma (,) — pause briefly. The idea is not finished yet, but breathe.
  • Dash (—) — pause with emphasis. Something important follows, or there is a sudden break.
  • Ellipsis (...) — pause and trail off. Creates suspense or suggests more to come.
  • Colon (:) — short pause before a list or explanation.
  • Semicolon (;) — medium pause. Connects two closely related ideas.

Punctuation That Means: Read Smoothly

  • No punctuation mid-sentence — keep reading without stopping.
  • Quotation marks ("...") — do not pause; change your voice to show a character is speaking.
  • Apostrophe (') — no pause at all; it just shows possession or contraction.
  • Hyphen (-) — joins words together; read them as one unit without pausing.
