Mini-lesson — A paragraph is a group of sentences

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one topic. It helps your writing feel organized and easy to read.

A strong short paragraph has 3 parts

  • Topic sentence: tells what the paragraph is about.
  • Detail sentences: tell more (facts, actions, or examples).
  • Closing sentence: wraps it up and ends the idea.

Guided Practice — Build a 3-sentence paragraph

Choose 3 sentences from the Trace menu and copy them neatly on paper. Then use the Tracing Pad to practice words, sentences, and marks.

Paragraph 1 — Recess

Paragraph 3 — My class

My class is a kind place . First , we help each other . Also , we share our supplies . That is why my class feels special . I eat cereal for breakfast . The dog barked at night .

Paragraph 4 — Drawing

I like drawing after school . First , I pick my colors . Then , I draw shapes and lines . Drawing helps me feel proud . My lunch was in a blue box . Rain fell on the window .

Paragraph 5 — Reading

Reading is one of my favorite things to do . First , I find a quiet place . Next , I open my book and begin . Books can take me on fun adventures . My shoes got muddy outside . The soup smelled warm and good .

Paragraph 6 — Helping at home

I help at home every day . First , I make my bed . Then , I put my toys away . Helping at home makes me feel responsible . The moon looked bright tonight . I kicked the ball at recess .
