How to use: Print first for the main practice. Then use the device to repeat activities and save progress.

Objective

I can edit my writing to find and fix spelling mistakes using simple strategies (sound it out, check parts, and confirm the word).

Materials

Mini-lesson — Edit spelling like a detective

Editing is what you do after you write. A good editor rereads and fixes small mistakes. Today we focus on spelling.

Spelling detective steps

  • Reread slowly and look for a word that “doesn’t look right.”
  • Sound it out and say the word slowly.
  • Check the parts (word chunks and endings like -ed and -s).
  • Confirm the word (word wall, dictionary, or a grown-up).
  • Fix it and reread the sentence again.

Example

  • Draft: I hopd in the puddle.
  • Edit: I hopped in the puddle.
