Sometimes you have two ideas that belong together. A conjunction is a joining word. It helps you connect ideas and make writing flow.

Common conjunctions

  • and = add an idea
  • but = show a different idea
  • or = choose one
  • so = show a result
  • because = give a reason

  • Start: I wanted to play. It rained.
  • Join: I wanted to play, but it rained.
