Mini Lesson

Math facts are the basic addition and subtraction equations you use every day. When you can recall them instantly — without counting — harder math becomes much easier!

What is a math fact?

  • A math fact is a simple equation you recall from memory, such as 7 + 8 = 15 or 13 − 5 = 8.
  • Addition and subtraction facts are linked as fact families. Knowing 6 + 8 = 14 gives you 14 − 8 = 6 for free.

Three ways to practice math facts

  • Flash cards: Cover the answer and try to recall it. Shuffle each round.
  • Speed drill: Write as many facts as you can in 2 minutes on your paper worksheet, then check.
  • Partner game: Say the start of the fact ("7 + 8 =") and race to call the answer first.

Finding a missing number in a fact

  • If you see 6 + ___ = 14, think: "What do I add to 6 to get 14?" Use the inverse: 14 − 6 = 8, so the answer is 8.
  • If you see ___ − 5 = 9, think: "What minus 5 gives 9?" Use the inverse: 9 + 5 = 14, so the answer is 14.

💡

Ask yourself: "Do I know this fact from memory? If there is a missing number, can I use the inverse to find it?"

Vocabulary
Math fact
A simple equation you remember from memorye.g. 7 + 8 = 15 is a math fact.
Recall
To remember something quicklye.g. I can recall 7 + 8 without counting.
Fact family
Three numbers that make four related equationse.g. 6, 8, and 14 are a fact family.
Inverse
The opposite operation that undoes anothere.g. Use the inverse to find a missing number.
Flash card
A small card with a math fact you practicee.g. I covered the answer on the flash card and tried to recall it.
