Mini Lesson

Welcome to a brand-new planet — Multiplication and Division Basics! We begin by seeing where multiplication comes from. It starts with repeated addition: adding the same number over and over.

What is repeated addition?

  • When you add the same number several times, that is repeated addition.
  • Example: 3 groups of 4 dots → 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
  • The number being repeated is the group size. The number of times you add it is the number of groups.

Reading a dot picture

  • Count how many groups there are.
  • Count how many dots are in each group (they should all be the same).
  • Write: [group size] + [group size] + ... (one addend per group).
  • Add them all up to find the total.

Examples

  • 2 groups of 5 → 5 + 5 = 10
  • 3 groups of 3 → 3 + 3 + 3 = 9
  • 4 groups of 2 → 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8
  • 5 groups of 4 → 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 20
