Mini Lesson

Everybody has things they love to do! Writing about your activities is fun and easy once you know the starter and the two magic extender words.

The starter — I like to + action word

  • Always begin with I like to, then add an action word.
  • Action words (verbs) say what you do: run, read, draw, swim, sing.
  • Example: I like to swim.

Extender 1 — when

  • Add when to tell the reader the time or situation.
  • Example: I like to swim when it is hot outside.
  • When answers the question: "When do you like to do that?"

Extender 2 — because

  • Add because to tell the reader your reason.
  • Example: I like to read because it takes me to new worlds.
  • Because answers the question: "Why do you like that?"

List two activities with and

  • You can join two activities in one sentence using and.
  • Example: I like to draw and paint pictures.
  • Keep both action words the same form: draw and paint, not drawing and paint.
