My Favorite Animal

Mini Lesson

When you write about an animal you love, you want the reader to understand what it is, what it is like, and why you love it. Three sentences can do all of that!

Sentence 1 — Name it

  • Tell the reader which animal is your favorite.
  • Pattern: My favorite animal is a [animal].
  • Example: My favorite animal is a dog.

Sentence 2 — Describe it

  • Use describing words to paint a picture of the animal.
  • Think about size, color, texture, or what it can do.
  • Example: It is soft, fluffy, and very playful.

Sentence 3 — Say why

  • Use because to give your reason.
  • Pattern: I love [animals] because [reason].
  • Example: I love dogs because they are loyal and fun.

Animal vocabulary

  • Common animals: dog, cat, rabbit, bird, fish, lion, elephant, dolphin.
  • Action words: runs, swims, flies, jumps, roars, purrs.
  • Describing words: soft, fluffy, fast, gentle, colorful, loud, quiet.
