Mini Lesson

Writing about your family is a great way to share who the important people in your life are. The secret is to choose describing words that paint a picture of each person.

Family vocabulary

  • People in a family: mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa.
  • Use My before the family word: My mom, My brother.
  • Family words do not need a capital unless they replace a name.

Two sentence patterns

  • Pattern 1: My [family member] is [describing word].
  • Example: My dad is tall and funny.
  • Pattern 2: My [family member] has a [describing word] [noun].
  • Example: My grandma has a warm smile.

Choose strong describing words

  • Think about what the person looks like: tall, short, curly hair.
  • Think about what they are like inside: kind, funny, caring, brave.
  • Two describing words joined by and make a richer sentence.

Keep the rules

  • Capital letter at the start. Period at the end.
  • Use My (capital M) when it starts the sentence.
  • Say your sentence aloud — does it paint a clear picture?
