In every town, there are people who help us and keep us safe, healthy, and learning.
These people are called community helpers. Some community helpers are:
- a doctor who helps us when we are sick or hurt
- a firefighter who helps put out fires and rescue people
- a teacher who helps children learn at school
- a police officer who helps keep people safe and follow rules
When you read about people who help us, you are often reading a nonfiction text. That means it gives you true information, not a made-up story.
Nonfiction texts about helpers might have:
- a title like “Firefighters” or “Nurses at Work”
- headings that tell what each part is about
- pictures that show helpers at work
- labels that name tools or places
Good readers use both the words and the pictures to understand:
- Who is helping?
- What do they do?
- Where do they work?
- How do they help people?
You can use these sentence frames:
“A _____ helps people by _____.”
“This helper works at a _____.”
Today, you will read about people who help us and practice telling what each helper does.
