Lesson 45: Matching pictures to words

📖 READING (40 Lessons)🟢 A. Sounds and Words

← Back to Level 1

Objective

Use the picture, first sound, and vowel sound to match each picture to the correct word.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Using pictures and words together

When you read, you often see a picture and a word together.

Your brain can use both to figure out what the word says.

Think about a picture of a sun in the sky.

  • You look at the picture and say, “I see a sun.”
  • Then you look at the word choices under the picture.

Good readers use three checks:

  1. Picture check: Say what you see in the picture. (sun, cat, bed…)
  2. Sound check: Look at the first letter. Does it match the first sound you said?
  3. Sense check: Ask, “Does this word make sense with the picture?”

If the picture shows a sun but the word is cup, something is wrong.

  • The first sound does not match.
  • The word does not fit the picture.
  • You go back and choose a word that matches both the picture and the sounds.

When you use picture, sounds, and meaning together, you match pictures to words like a reading detective.

Picture: Choosing the word that matches the sun picture.

Guided Practice — Picture-word mini-book

Now let’s practice together.

On each page of the mini-book, you will see a short sentence. As you read, try to picture it in your mind.

Then ask yourself:

  • “What do I see in the picture in my mind?”
  • “What word matches that picture?”
  • “Does the first letter sound right?”

If the picture in your mind does not match the word, stop and try a new word that fits better.

Words you will see in this mini-book

When you read a word, say it out loud and imagine the picture that goes with it.
