Objective

I can make a simple "My global friends" booklet that shows children in different places around the world and talk kindly about one way they are the same as me and one way they are different.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Children around the world

Children live in many countries around the world. We can call them our global friends.

Different and the same

  • Children may wear different clothes.
  • They may eat different foods or speak different languages.
  • They also like many of the same things, such as playing, learning, and being with family and friends.

Talking kindly about others

  • We use kind words when we talk about people from other places.
  • We can say, "This is different from me, and that is okay."
  • We remember that every child is important and deserves respect.

My global friends booklet

  • A booklet is a small book with a few pages.
  • Your booklet will show children in different places.
  • On each page, you can show one way that child is the same as you and one way they are different.

An adult can help choose which places to show. We do not share private information about real people; we make safe, simple pictures and kind sentences.

Guided Practice — Plan your global friends pages

You will plan three pages for your booklet. Each page will show one global friend.

  1. On a notebook page, draw three boxes down the page. Number them 1, 2, and 3.
  2. In box 1, draw a child in another part of your country or a nearby country. In box 2 and 3, draw children in other places in the world. An adult can help you choose.
  3. Under each box, make a line that says "Same:" and a line that says "Different:".
  4. Tell an adult one way that child is the same as you (for example, "likes football") and one way they are different (for example, "wears different clothes"). The adult can help write or trace these words.
  5. At the top of your page, write or trace the title: "My global friends plan".
  6. Read your "Same" and "Different" lines aloud to an adult.

Practice — Make your global friends booklet

Use your plan to make a small booklet that celebrates global friends in a kind way.

  1. Fold one sheet of paper in half to make a small booklet. This will be your "My global friends" book.
  2. On the front cover, write or trace the title: "My global friends". Draw a simple picture of children around a globe or standing together.
  3. Inside the booklet, use one page for each global friend from your plan (at least three pages). Draw the child and their place.
  4. On each page, write or trace a short sentence for "Same:" and a short sentence for "Different:". An adult can help with the words.
  5. Color your pictures neatly. Make sure faces and bodies look kind and respectful, never silly or unkind.
  6. Share your booklet with an adult. Read each page aloud, saying both the "Same" and "Different" sentences.
