Objective

I can tell, in simple words, what a country is and create a country collage that shows flag colors, land and water, and special things from my country with pictures and labels.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What is a country collage?

A country is a big area of land where people share a government and many rules. It is bigger than a town or city.

Ways to show a country

  • A map shows where the country is on the Earth.
  • A flag shows colors and shapes for the country.
  • Pictures can show land, water, animals, buildings, and people.

What can be in a country collage?

  • Flag colors in one corner of the page.
  • Land and water shapes, like hills, rivers, or the sea.
  • Special things from your country: buildings, foods, animals, or games.
  • People from your country learning, working, and playing.

Pictures and labels together

  • A collage uses many pictures on one page.
  • Labels are short words, like "flag", "river", or "city", that tell what a picture is.
  • Good collages are neat, colorful, and kind when they show people.

In this lesson, you will make a country collage that fits your family or classroom. An adult can help you choose the name of the country and what to show.

Guided Practice — Plan your country collage

You will plan your country collage on a notebook page before making it on big paper.

  1. At the top of your notebook page, write or trace: "My country collage".
  2. Ask an adult to help you write the name of your country in the middle of the page.
  3. Draw a small flag box. Add simple flag colors for your country, or choose colors with an adult.
  4. Under the flag, draw two small boxes. In one box, sketch land and water, like hills, rivers, or the sea. In the other box, sketch something special, like a building, animal, or food from your country.
  5. Next to each sketch, write or trace a short label, such as "flag", "river", "city", or "people".
  6. Show your plan to an adult and explain each picture in one sentence.

Practice — Make and share your country collage

Use your plan to make a full country collage and talk about it with an adult.

  1. On large paper, draw a flag area in one corner. Fill it with simple flag colors for your country.
  2. In the middle of the page, draw land and water shapes, such as hills, rivers, the sea, or fields. You can pretend it is a simple map of your country.
  3. Around the land and water, draw or glue pictures of special things from your country: buildings, animals, foods, games, or clothes.
  4. Add short labels under your pictures. Write or trace words like "flag", "river", "city", "village", or "people".
  5. Color your collage neatly. Try to keep it clear so others can see your ideas.
  6. Show your collage to an adult. Point to each part and say a full sentence, such as "This is the river in my country." or "These are people playing in a park."
