Materials

Mini-lesson — Safety in our community

A community is the place where you live, learn, and play. Safety rules help keep everyone safe.

Places in our community

  • The street and road.
  • The park or play area.
  • The shop or market.
  • The bus stop or car.

Simple safety rules

  • Stay near a trusted adult in busy places.
  • On roads, stop, look, and listen before you walk.
  • Cross at a safe place when an adult says it is okay.
  • In a car or bus, sit on the seat and use your belt if there is one.
  • At the park, use the play area in a kind and safe way.

Asking for help

  • If you feel worried, tell an adult you know.
  • Use short words like "help" or "safe".
  • Stay in a bright place while you wait with a trusted adult.

Safety rules are not to scare you. They are there to help you stay safe while you live, learn, and play.

Guided Practice — My safety picture

You will draw a picture that shows one safe choice in your community.

  1. Choose a place: the road, the park, the shop, or the bus stop.
  2. Think of one safe action you can do there, such as walk, wait, look, or ask for help.
  3. Draw yourself and an adult in that place. Show what you do to stay safe.
  4. Add short labels like "stop", "look", "walk", "help", or "safe".
  5. Under your picture, write or trace one sentence: "I stay safe when I _____ ."
  6. Read your sentence aloud to an adult. Point to the safe action in your picture as you read.

Practice — Safe or not safe?

Use these ideas to talk about safe choices in your community. An adult can read the ideas and let you explain what you would do.

  1. An adult reads a short idea like "You are at the park with your family." Talk together about what is safe to do.
  2. Use short words like "walk", "wait", "help", "near", and "safe".
  3. Say one full sentence, such as "I stay near my adult." or "I wait at the edge of the road."
  4. Try two or three different places: the road, the park, the shop, or the bus stop. For each place, name one safe choice.
  5. At the end, tell an adult which safety rule you want to remember most, such as "stop, look, and listen".

Quick Check — Safety in our community

Answer each question about safe choices in your community. These questions help you think about what to do. They do not talk about real accidents.

We stop, look, and listen before we walk.

Staying near a trusted adult helps keep you safe.

3) Which short word matches a safe action on the road?

We stop before we cross the road.

4) You are in a car or bus. What helps you stay safe?

We sit on the seat and use a belt when we can.

Taking turns and walking help everyone stay safe.
