🟡 SOCIAL STUDIES (40 Lessons)🟢 A. About Me and My Family

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can make a simple family tree and say who is in my family using short sentences.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What is a family tree?

A family tree is a picture that shows who is in your family and how people are linked.

Simple ideas for this age

  • We often start with you near the middle.
  • We can show mum, dad, or other grown-ups who care for you.
  • We can add brother, sister, or other children in the family.
  • We may add grandma, grandpa, or other close family members.

Families can look different

  • Some children live with one parent.
  • Some live with grandma or grandpa.
  • Some have many brothers or sisters, some have none.
  • All loving families are important.

Short family sentences

  • "This is my mum."
  • "This is my dad."
  • "This is my sister."
  • "These are my grandparents."

We never say one family is better than another. We listen and show respect.

Guided Practice — My family tree

You will make a simple family tree on your page.

  1. Turn your paper so it is tall. At the top, write: "My family tree".
  2. In the middle, draw a small box and write "me" and your name or initials.
  3. Above you, draw boxes for the grown-ups who care for you, such as mum, dad, or other carers. Join them to you with simple lines.
  4. Next, add boxes for brother or sister if you have them. Join them with a line to the same parents or carers.
  5. If you wish, add grandma and grandpa at the top row and join them to mum or dad with lines.
  6. Colour each box lightly and add a small face or symbol if you like.
  7. Practise pointing and saying short sentences such as "This is my mum." and "This is my sister.".

Practice — Talking through my family tree

Use your family tree page to share who is in your family. Keep your words kind and respectful.

  1. Sit with an adult or with your family and hold your family tree.
  2. Point to each box and say a short sentence such as "This is my mum." or "This is my grandpa."
  3. If you feel safe, tell one thing you like to do with that person, such as "We read" or "We play."
  4. Listen when others talk about their family. Do not laugh at any family. Families can look different.
  5. At the end, tell an adult one thing you feel happy about in your family.
