← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name my family members, tell one or two things we do together, and show respect for different kinds of families.

Materials

Mini-lesson — My family members

A family is a group of people who care about one another. They may live in the same home or stay in touch in other ways.

Families can look different

  • Some children live with two parents.
  • Some live with one parent.
  • Some live with grandparents or other carers.
  • Some have brothers and sisters, and some do not.

Talking about family members

  • "This is my mum."
  • "This is my dad."
  • "This is my grandma."
  • "This is my brother/my sister."
  • "This is the grown-up who takes care of me."

What families do together

  • Eat meals together.
  • Play games or go for walks.
  • Talk, tell stories, or read.
  • Help each other with jobs at home.

Every family is special. We use kind words when we talk about our own family and other people's families.

  3. Under each person, write or trace a label: "mum", "dad", "grandma", "grandpa", "brother", "sister", "carer", or another word that fits.
  4. At the bottom, write or trace a sentence such as "We like to _____ together."
  5. Practise pointing and saying each person's name: "This is my _____ ."

Practice — Sharing about my family

Use your "My family" page to share gently about who is in your family and what you do together.

  1. Sit with an adult or with your family and hold your page.
  2. Point to each person and say a simple sentence, such as "This is my mum." or "This is my grandma."
  3. Say one thing you like to do together, such as "We read", "We cook", or "We play outside".
  4. Listen kindly if someone else shares about their family. Remember that families can be different, and that is okay.
  5. Tell an adult one way you can help your family at home this week.
