← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can tell what exercise is, name different ways to move my body, and explain how moving helps my heart, muscles, and bones stay healthy.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Exercise and movement

Our body is made to move. When we move on purpose to help our body, it is called exercise.

What is exercise?

  • Exercise is moving your body to stay strong and healthy.
  • It can be fast or slow, but it should make your body work.
  • Playing outside, running, dancing, and jumping are all types of exercise.

Different kinds of movement

  • Walking is gentle movement that warms up the body.
  • Running and jumping make your heart beat faster.
  • Stretching helps your muscles stay loose and ready.
  • Dancing is a fun way to move to music.

How exercise helps our body

  • Exercise makes our heart stronger so it can pump blood.
  • It helps our muscles and bones grow strong.
  • Moving can give us more energy and help us sleep better.
  • Exercise can make us feel happy and calm.

Move, then rest

  • It is good to move every day and also have rest time.
  • We listen to our body. If we feel tired or sore, we slow down.
  • We drink water after moving to help our body.

A healthy day has time for moving, time for resting, and time for eating healthy food.

Guided Practice — Move, notice, and talk

You will try simple movements, then notice how your body feels and talk about it.

  1. Safe space: Find a safe place to move with an adult. Check that there is room and no sharp corners nearby.
  2. Warm-up walk: Walk slowly around for 30 seconds. How does your body feel? Is your heart beating slowly or quickly?
  3. Run or march: Now run in place or march with high knees for 30 seconds. Place a hand on your chest. Is your heart beating faster now?
  4. Jumping: Do 10 small jumps. Notice your breathing. Is it a little faster?
  5. Stretch: Reach your arms up high, then bend to touch your toes (if you can). Hold each stretch for 5 seconds.
  6. Rest and talk: Sit down. Take a few slow breaths. Talk about how your heart, breathing, and muscles felt when you moved and when you rested.
  7. Draw a movement picture: In your notebook, draw yourself doing one exercise (running, jumping, or dancing). Label it with a word like "run" or "jump".
  8. Use the tracing pad: Choose words like run, jump, move, exercise, or strong and trace them. Say a sentence such as "Exercise helps my body."

Practice 1 — Move and feel your heart

Try short movements and notice how your heart and breathing change.

  1. Place your hand gently on your chest when you are sitting. Feel your heart beat if you can.
  2. Stand up and do 10 slow marches on the spot. Then stop and feel your heart again.
  3. Now do 10 small jumps or star jumps. Stop and feel your heart and breathing. Are they faster now?
  4. Draw a small chart with three pictures: "sitting", "marching", "jumping". Under each, draw a happy face if you feel good and a small arrow up if your heart got faster.
  5. Talk about what you noticed: "When I moved more, my heart beat faster."

Practice 2 — My movement diary

Think about how you move during a normal day.

  1. Fold your page into three parts and label them: "Morning", "Afternoon", and "Evening".
  2. In the morning box, draw one way you move, such as walking to school or stretching when you wake up.
  3. In the afternoon box, draw an active game, like playing tag, riding a scooter, or running at the park.
  4. In the evening box, draw a gentle movement, such as slow dancing or stretching.
  5. Under each picture, write a short label like "I run" or "I dance".

Practice 3 — Exercise choice stories

Listen to each short story and choose the more active choice.

  1. A child can watch TV for a long time or play outside for a while. Which choice helps their body move more? Why?
  2. At the park, a child can sit on a bench the whole time or join a running game with friends. Which one is exercise?
  3. Inside, a child can lie on the floor doing nothing or put on music and dance. Which one helps their heart and muscles?
  4. Make your own story with two choices: one still and one moving. Circle the exercise choice and tell why it is better for health.
  5. Draw a small picture to match your story and label it with a word like "exercise" or "movement".
