Lesson 148: Healthy eating habits

🔬 SCIENCE (40 Lessons)🟣 D. Our Body and Health

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can name healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, talk about drinking water, and choose healthy snacks that help my body grow and have energy.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Healthy eating habits

Food gives our body energy to move, play, and learn. It also helps us grow and stay healthy.

Different kinds of foods

  • Fruits (like apples, bananas, and oranges) help keep us strong and give us vitamins.
  • Vegetables (like carrots, broccoli, and peas) help our body stay healthy inside.
  • Grains (like bread, rice, and pasta) give us energy.
  • Proteins (like beans, eggs, and fish) help build our muscles.

What is a healthy meal?

  • A healthy meal has different kinds of foods, not only one thing.
  • Try to have some fruit or vegetables on your plate.
  • Drink water with meals instead of lots of sweet drinks.

Healthy snacks

  • Good snack ideas: fruit, cut vegetables, yogurt, or a small handful of nuts (if safe).
  • Less healthy if we eat them a lot: chips, candy, and very sugary drinks.
  • It is okay to have a sweet treat sometimes, but not all day.

Drinking water

  • Our body needs water every day.
  • Water helps our blood move and our brain think.
  • When we feel thirsty, it is time to drink water.

Healthy eating means making good choices most of the time so our body has energy to run, play, and learn.

Guided Practice — Build a healthy plate

You will design a healthy plate with different foods and talk about why they are good for you.

  1. Draw a big plate: On your paper, draw a big circle for a plate. Divide it into three or four parts.
  2. Add fruits and vegetables: In one part, draw some fruits. In another part, draw some vegetables.
  3. Add grains and protein: Draw foods like bread, rice, pasta, beans, eggs, or fish in other parts of your plate.
  4. Add a drink: Draw a glass of water next to your plate.
  5. Label your foods: Write short labels such as "apple", "carrot", "rice", or "beans".
  6. Talk about your plate: Say which foods are fruits, which are vegetables, which give energy, and which help your muscles.
  7. Compare plates: If you can, compare with someone else. What healthy foods did they choose?
  8. Use the tracing pad: Choose words like fruit, vegetable, water, healthy, or snack and trace them. Say a sentence such as "Fruit is a healthy snack."

Practice 1 — Sort snacks: healthy or not?

Sort snack ideas into "Healthy snack" and "Not so healthy snack". Explain why.

  1. Draw two boxes on your paper. Label one "Healthy snack" and the other "Not so healthy snack".
  2. In the healthy box, draw or write snacks like apple slices, carrot sticks, plain yogurt, or a banana.
  3. In the not so healthy box, add snacks like big candy bar, large bag of chips, or very sugary drink.
  4. Talk about which snacks you could eat most days and which ones should be only sometimes.
  5. Circle one healthy snack you want to try this week.

Practice 2 — My breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Think about your meals and add healthy foods to each one.

  1. Fold your page into three parts and label them: "Breakfast", "Lunch", and "Dinner".
  2. Under Breakfast, draw or write what you might eat, such as fruit, bread, or milk. Check that you have at least one healthy food.
  3. Under Lunch, add foods like sandwich, salad, vegetable sticks, or water.
  4. Under Dinner, include foods such as rice or pasta, vegetables, and beans, eggs, or fish.
  5. For each meal, point to your drawing and say one sentence, such as "My lunch has vegetables to help me stay healthy."

Practice 3 — Food choice stories

Listen to each short food story and choose the healthier option.

  1. A child is thirsty after playing outside. They can choose a fizzy sugary drink or a glass of water. Which drink is healthier? Why?
  2. A child is hungry between lunch and dinner. They can choose a small bowl of fruit or a large bag of chips. Which snack would you pick for a healthy body?
  3. For breakfast, a child can choose sugary cake or wholegrain toast with fruit. Which one gives better energy for school?
  4. At a party, there are vegetables with dip and also a lot of candy. What is one healthy thing the child can put on their plate?
  5. Make your own food choice story. Draw two choices, circle the healthier one, and tell why it is better.
