Objective

I can tell what wind is and what storms are. I can say that wind is moving air that can be gentle or strong, and that storms can bring heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. I can name simple safety rules for windy and stormy weather.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What are wind and storms?

On some days the air feels still and quiet. On other days, we feel wind on our faces or see things moving in the air. Sometimes weather becomes very strong and we see storms.

Wind

  • Wind is moving air.
  • We can feel wind on our skin and see it move leaves, trees, or flags.
  • A breeze is a gentle, soft wind.
  • Strong wind can make big trees sway and can push umbrellas and hats.

Storms

  • A storm is weather with strong wind and often heavy rain.
  • Some storms have thunder (loud sound) and lightning (bright flash of light in the sky).
  • Storms can make the sky look very dark.

Staying safe in storms

  • Stay indoors with an adult during strong wind and storms.
  • Stay away from big trees and loose objects that could blow around.
  • Do not stand in deep water or run into the road.
  • If thunder is loud or lightning is bright, stay inside and close windows with a grown-up.

Wind and storms are part of our weather. Learning about them helps us enjoy windy days and stay safe when storms come.

Guided Practice — Feel the wind and talk about storms

You will notice wind around you and talk about storms. Use simple words to say what you see and feel.

  1. Check for wind: With an adult, stand near a safe window or outside. Can you feel any wind on your face or hands?
  2. Look at objects: Watch leaves, grass, or a flag. Are they still, moving a little, or moving a lot?
  3. Use gentle wind: Slowly blow on a small paper scrap or leaf in your hand. See how it moves. This is like a breeze.
  4. Talk about storms: Ask, "What happens when wind is very strong?" and "What do we do when there is a storm?"
  5. Draw three pictures: On your paper, draw: a calm day, a windy day, and a stormy day. Add tiny labels like "calm", "windy", and "storm".
  6. Use the tracing pad: Choose words like wind, breeze, storm, or safe from the dropdown and trace them slowly. Say the word as you write.
  7. Finish with a sentence: Write one sentence such as "Wind is moving air" or "In a storm I stay inside".

Practice 1 — Breeze or strong wind?

Think about different kinds of wind. Decide when it is a gentle breeze and when it is strong wind.

  1. On your paper, draw two headings: "Breeze" and "Strong wind".
  2. Under breeze, write or draw things like: leaf moving a little, hair moving softly, kite flying calmly.
  3. Under strong wind, write or draw things like: trees bending, hat blowing away, umbrella turning inside out.
  4. Talk about which kind of wind feels safe to play in and which wind means you should stay close to an adult.

Think about what you might see and hear in a storm, and how to stay safe.

Practice 3 — Wind and storm story

Use your imagination to tell a short story about a windy day and a storm.

  1. Draw a picture of a child flying a kite on a windy day. Show the wind with small lines or moving grass.
  2. Next to it, draw a picture of the same child staying inside with an adult during a storm.
  3. Write (or say) one or two sentences, such as: "The breeze helped my kite fly" and "In the storm we stayed inside and felt safe".
  4. Share your pictures and story with someone and explain how the weather changed.
