Materials

Mini-lesson — Writing about things I like to do

Good writers can tell about their own life. One simple way to start is with the words I like to….

Talking about your interests

  • Think about fun things you do at home, school, or outside.
  • These can be quiet things (like reading) or active things (like running).
  • Each idea can become a short sentence.

Using the starter "I like to…"

  • Begin your sentence with a capital I.
  • Add a doing word (verb), like run, draw, swim, read, or play.
  • Finish the sentence with a period at the end.

One idea per sentence

  • Each sentence should tell about one thing you like to do.
  • Write a new sentence for each new idea.
  • This keeps your writing clear and easy to understand.

Try saying: "I like to…" and finish it with a fun activity, then write your sentence on the line.

Guided Practice — Activity sentence warm-up

Use this routine to practice sentences about things you like to do.

  1. Think of activities: Say out loud some things you like, such as run, draw, read, or play.
  2. Start with I: Say a sentence like I like to run. or I like to read.
  3. Trace on the pad: On the Tracing Pad, choose a word or short pattern, such as I like or to read. Trace the words neatly on the line.
  4. Keep one idea: Make sure each pattern you trace matches one thing you like to do.
  5. Move to paper: On your paper, write two or three sentences about things you like to do, using I like to… at the start.
  6. Check your work: Read your sentences. Look for a capital I, clear spaces, and a period at the end.

You can use these I like to… sentences in longer stories about your life later.
