Lesson 106: Making simple graphs

🧮 MATH (40 Lessons)🟣 D. Data and Money

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can make a simple graph using real objects and read which group has the most or the least.

Materials

Mini-lesson — What is a graph?

A graph shows how many things we have in each group. We use graphs to compare.

Object graph

  • We place real objects in columns.
  • Each column shows how many items are in that group.
  • The taller column has more.

Picture graph

  • Each object becomes a small picture or symbol.
  • Pictures line up like the objects did.
  • We can still see which has most or least.

Graphs help us see data quickly. Instead of counting everything again, we just look at the graph.

Guided Practice — Build a graph with real objects

You will use real objects to build your own graph. Then, you trace graph words.

  1. Choose 3 colors or types from Lesson 105 (like red, blue, green).
  2. Sort the objects into 3 groups.
  3. Build a graph by placing each object in a column.
  4. Look at your graph: Which group has the most? Which has the least?
  5. Trace on the pad: Trace graph, most, and least.
  6. Add a tiny picture: Next to red, draw a red dot; next to blue, draw a blue dot.

Quick Check — Simple graphs

Answer each question by looking at the graph ideas from the lesson.

1) What does a graph show?

A graph shows amounts.

2) In a graph, the tallest column means:

Taller means more.

3) Which word means the smallest amount?

Least means the smallest amount.

4) When we use real objects in columns, we make a:

Real objects = object graph.

5) When objects turn into pictures, it becomes a:

Small pictures represent each object.

6) Which word helps us compare amounts?

Most helps compare.

7) Which word means the smallest amount?

Least = smallest.

8) Which picture graph column has the most?

We look at amount, not color.

9) If blue has 3 and red has 2, which has more?

3 > 2.

10) Which has the least if red=1, blue=2, green=3?

1 is least.

11) What do we call a picture that stands for many objects?

A symbol represents something.

12) What do we do before making a graph?

Graphs come from sorted data.

13) Which graph uses real objects?

Object graph uses real things.

14) Which graph uses small drawings?

Drawings = picture graph.

15) Why do we use graphs?

Graphs show data fast.
