Lesson 105: Collecting and sorting objects

🧮 MATH (40 Lessons)🟣 D. Data and Money

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can collect objects and sort them into groups by looking at their color, size, and shape. I can use words like big, small, round, color, shape, and size, and I can talk about how my groups are different.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Sorting objects into groups

When we sort objects, we put things that are alike together. Sorting helps us see patterns, differences, and how many we have in each group.

Sorting by Color

  • We look at the color of each object.
  • We put red things with red things and blue things with blue things.
  • Sorting by color helps us notice how many of each color we collected.

Sorting by Size

  • We look at how big or small objects are.
  • Big items go in one group, and small items go in another.
  • We can see which size group has more things.

Sorting by Shape

  • We look for shapes like round, square, or triangle.
  • Objects with the same shape go together.
  • Sorting by shape helps us compare how different objects look.

When we sort objects, we show what makes them similar and what makes them different.

Guided Practice — Collect and sort real objects

You will collect a few small classroom objects and sort them into groups. Look carefully at how they look and decide how to sort them.

  1. Collect: Choose 6–10 small items (like crayons, buttons, paper clips, or blocks).
  2. Sort by color: Put objects with the same color together.
  3. Sort by size: Make a group of big items and a group of small items.
  4. Sort by shape: Make groups for round shapes, square shapes, or other shapes you see.
  5. Label groups: Write a short label for one group (for example, red, big, or round).
  6. Trace and draw: Choose one word and trace it on the tracing pad. Add a tiny picture to match the group.
