Grade 6 · Reading · Lesson 9

Determine theme with multiple supporting details

A theme is the central message or life lesson a story communicates to its readers. Unlike a topic \u2014 which is simply what the story is about \u2014 a theme is a statement about human experience that the author conveys through characters, events, and conflicts. Themes are almost never stated directly; skilled readers infer them by gathering multiple supporting details and looking for the pattern those details create.
