Apply new vocabulary in writing

Reading a new word once is rarely enough to make it yours. Research in vocabulary acquisition shows that you need to encounter a word multiple times — and, more importantly, you need to use it yourself. Writing with a new vocabulary word is one of the most powerful ways to shift it from short-term memory into long-term recall. When you choose the right word for your sentence, you are processing its meaning, its grammar, and its register all at once.
