Mini Lesson

A mixed-skill review pulls one or two problems from each major Grade 5 skill area: place value, multiplication, fractions, decimals, geometry, and measurement. The trick to a mixed set is naming the skill before solving. Once you know which skill the problem uses, the method is the one you already learned for that topic.

Six Skill Areas in This Review

  1. Place value — read, write, and compare numbers through millions; identify the value of a digit.
  2. Multiplication — multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers using partial products or the standard algorithm.
  3. Fractions — add and subtract fractions, compare them, and find equivalents.
  4. Decimals — read, write, compare, and round decimals through hundredths.
  5. Geometry — name shapes, classify triangles and quadrilaterals, and identify angles.
  6. Measurement — find length, area, and perimeter; convert between units of measure.

Three-Step Plan for Mixed Problems

  1. Name the skill — read the problem and decide which skill area it belongs to.
  2. Choose the method — recall the steps you used for that skill (partial products, common denominators, area = length x width, etc.).
  3. Solve and check — work the problem, then estimate or use simpler numbers to confirm the answer is reasonable.

Examples of Naming the Skill

  • "What is the value of 7 in 7,250,418?" — Place value.
  • "Find 24 x 35." — Multiplication.
  • "Add 1/2 and 1/3." — Fractions.
  • "Round 4.27 to the nearest tenth." — Decimals.
  • "Classify a triangle with three equal sides." — Geometry.
  • "A rectangle is 8 m (about 26 ft) by 5 m. Find its area." — Measurement.

Worked example: 24 times 35 solved step by stepWorked Example: 24 x 35Skill: Multiplication. Tip: name the skill out loud before you start solving. Saying "this is fractions" or "this is geometry" reminds you which method to reach for.

Vocabulary

mixed problems
Problems given in random order from different skill areas, not grouped by topic.
