Peer mentoring week

Peer mentoring is a relationship where one learner (the mentor) supports another (the mentee) in developing skills, confidence, or knowledge. During peer mentoring week, you practice both roles — being a guide and being a learner.

Mentor and Mentee Roles

• Mentor: guides learning, shares skills, gives kind feedback, encourages, leads by example.
• Mentee: asks questions, practices skills, accepts feedback openly, stays curious.
• Both roles require respect, patience, and a growth mindset.

Empathy in Peer Mentoring

Empathy is essential for a mentor. Understanding how a mentee feels — nervous, confused, or frustrated — helps the mentor choose the right words and approach. A mentor who shows empathy creates a safe space for learning.

Active Listening Skills

• Make eye contact to show you are fully present.
• Nod and give short responses ("I see", "Go on") to encourage the speaker.
• Ask open questions to learn more ("How did that make you feel?").
• Do not interrupt — wait until the other person finishes.
• Remember key details to show you were truly listening.

Why Peer Mentoring Builds Relationship Skills

Peer mentoring requires communication, trust-building, and empathy — all core relationship skills. When you mentor someone, you learn to be patient and clear. When you are mentored, you practice receiving help gracefully. Both experiences make you a stronger collaborator.
