Write Persuasive Paragraphs

Every time you try to convince someone of something — that a movie is worth watching, that the school needs a longer recess, that dogs are better pets than cats — you are using persuasion. Persuasive writing is the same skill on paper: you state what you believe, give your best reasons, and end by inviting the reader to agree with you.

What this lesson teaches

1Write a persuasive paragraph with four parts: opinion, two reasons, and a closing argument
2State an opinion clearly using signal words such as "I believe," "I think," or "In my opinion"
3Support the opinion with two specific reasons linked by evidence connectors
4Distinguish an opinion from a fact and use both together in persuasive writing
5Close the paragraph with a restated opinion that invites the reader to agree or act
