How to use: Print first for the main practice. Then use the device to repeat activities and save progress.

Objective

I can write clear instructions or how-to steps in the right order using helpful details and sequence words.

Materials

Mini-lesson β€” Good instructions are clear and in order

Instructions help someone do a task. Good how-to writing uses steps in the correct order and gives enough details so the reader can follow them without guessing.

What strong writers do

  • Start with the goal: Tell what the reader will learn to do.
  • Put steps in order: Use words like first, next, then, and finally.
  • Be specific: Say exactly what to use or what to do.
  • Check for missing parts: Ask: Could someone follow this without help?

Example

  • Goal: How to plant a bean seed
  • Steps: First fill the cup with soil. Next place the seed inside. Then cover it lightly. Finally water the soil.

Quick check: β€œCan the reader understand my writing without extra help?”
