Mini Lesson

A fraction shows equal parts of a whole. When we cut a pizza into equal slices, each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza. The bottom number (denominator) tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The top number (numerator) tells us how many parts we are talking about.

Parts of a Fraction

  • Numerator (top): the number of shaded or chosen parts.
  • Denominator (bottom): the total number of equal parts.
  • Example: 3/4 means 3 out of 4 equal parts are shaded.
  • The parts MUST be equal — an uneven cut does not make fair fractions.

Comparing Fractions

  • With the same denominator: the bigger the numerator, the bigger the fraction. 3/5 > 2/5.
  • With the same numerator: the smaller the denominator, the bigger each piece. 1/3 > 1/5.
  • Equivalent fractions: 2/4 = 1/2 (same amount, different number of pieces).

The denominator is like the number of slices you cut the pizza into. More slices = smaller pieces!

Vocabulary
Fraction
A number that shows part of a wholee.g. 3/8 of the pizza is mine.
Numerator
The top number of a fraction — counts the partse.g. In 3/8, the numerator is 3.
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction — total partse.g. In 3/8, the denominator is 8.
Whole
One complete objecte.g. The whole pizza has 8 slices.
Equal parts
Pieces that are the same sizee.g. Cut the pizza into 8 equal parts.
Slice
One piece of a divided wholee.g. I ate 3 slices of pizza.
