Mini Lesson

Data is information we collect. In a survey, we ask a question and record the answers. Tally marks help us count quickly — four upright lines and one diagonal across makes a group of 5. Then we can put the totals into a bar graph to compare the results easily.

Steps to Make a Bar Graph

  1. Survey: ask your family and friends "What is your favorite sport?"
  2. Record: use tally marks to count each answer.
  3. Count: total the tallies for each sport.
  4. Draw: draw a bar for each sport. The height of the bar shows the number of votes.
  5. Label: give your graph a title, label the x-axis (sports) and y-axis (number of people).

Reading a Bar Graph

  • The tallest bar shows the most popular choice.
  • The shortest bar shows the least popular choice.
  • To find the total, add all the bar values together.
  • To compare: "How many more chose X than Y?" Subtract the two values.

Always start your y-axis at 0. Make sure each interval on the axis is the same size.
