Mini Lesson

Planning a shopping trip with a budget means you need to add up prices and check you have enough money. If you spend less than your budget, you get change back. Change = Budget - Total Spent. Being good at adding money amounts and making change is a key life skill!

Adding Money

  1. Line up the decimal points when adding money amounts.
  2. Add the cents first, then carry over if needed.
  3. Add the euros next.
  4. Example: EUR 1.50 + EUR 2.30 = EUR 3.80

Making Change

  1. Start with the amount paid (your budget).
  2. Subtract the total amount spent.
  3. The result is your change.
  4. Example: EUR 20.00 - EUR 9.70 = EUR 10.30 change.

Count up from the total spent to your budget to find change. E.g. EUR 9.70 + EUR 0.30 = EUR 10.00, then + EUR 10.00 = EUR 20.00. Change = EUR 10.30.
