← Back to Level 3

Objective

I can plan and design a simple class magazine by creating a cover, a table of contents, and 1–2 feature pages that include clear headlines, bylines, captions, and easy-to-read layouts.

Materials

Tip: Magazine pages feel clear when they have big headlines, short paragraphs, helpful pictures, and small captions.

Mini-lesson — What goes in a class magazine?

  1. Cover: Includes a masthead (magazine name), main image, issue date, and a big headline.
  2. Table of Contents: Lists page numbers and article titles so readers can find sections fast.
  3. Feature Page: Needs a headline, byline (author), 2–3 short paragraphs, at least one image, and a caption.
  4. Layout Basics: Use columns, white space, and text boxes. Keep fonts readable and consistent.
  5. Teamwork: Roles like editor, writer, and designer help everyone contribute.

Guided Practice — Sketch your pages

Use the pad to sketch a cover and one feature page:

  • Cover: Masthead at the top, a big image, the main headline, and the issue date.
  • Feature page: Headline, byline, 2–3 short paragraphs, image box, and a caption under the image.
  • Try simple layout guides: two columns, clear margins, and space between sections.

Key terms to trace first: masthead, headline, byline, caption, contents.
