Tip: Rhyming words sound the same at the end: cat—hat, sun—fun. Keep lines short and end with a period.

Objective

I can read, say, and write simple poem lines using rhyming words that end with the same sounds.

Materials

Listen for the ending sound to find a rhyme.

Mini-lesson — What is a rhyme?

  1. Rhyming words have the same ending sound (cat/hat).
  2. Write short lines with a capital at the start.
  3. Use a period at the end of each line.
  4. Read your lines—do the last words rhyme?

Try rhyme families: -at (cat/hat), -ug (bug/mug), -an (pan/fan).

Guided Practice — Trace rhyming lines

Trace and write short poem lines. Say the last two words—do they rhyme?

  • I see a cat.
  • I wear a hat.
  • The bug sips from a mug.

Practice capitals for line starts and use a period.
