Mini-lesson — Adventures have a problem to solve

An adventure story is an exciting story where a character faces a challenge and keeps going. Your job is to help the reader see the story and follow what happens.

A strong adventure story has 4 parts

  • Character: Who is the story about?
  • Setting: Where does it happen?
  • Problem: What goes wrong or needs to be fixed?
  • Solution: How does the character solve it?

Quick planning trick

  • Beginning: Meet the character and place.
  • Middle: The problem happens.
  • End: The solution and how the character feels.

Try this: add one strong action word in each sentence (ran, climbed, grabbed, dashed, whispered).

Leo entered a cave with a glowing blue lantern. Inside, a stone door would not open no matter how hard he pushed. Then he whispered the riddle answer and heard the lock click open. Finally he found the treasure room and felt amazed. My brother kicked a soccer ball in the yard. I sharpened my pencil before math.
Nina flew her little rocket to a dusty red planet. When she landed, her map blew away in the strong wind. Then she chased it, caught it, and tied it to her boot. In the end she laughed and kept exploring the planet. My mom folded towels after dinner. I drew a cat with a green crayon.
Omar followed a tiny dragon into a hidden garden. Soon a wall of thorns blocked the path to a silver gate. Then the dragon breathed warm fire and cleared a small opening. At last Omar stepped through and found the shining fountain. My aunt cooked rice in the kitchen. I washed my hands before lunch.
Ella sailed across the sea in a small wooden boat. A giant wave crashed over the side and soaked her treasure map. Then she spread the map under the sun until it dried again. Finally she followed the lines and reached the island cave. My class read a story on the rug. I tied my shoes before recess.
Kai climbed a tall tower to rescue a lost owl. Halfway up, the stairs cracked and made a scary sound. Then he used a rope ladder and carefully climbed the rest of the way. In the end he carried the owl down and felt proud. My friend shared crayons in art class. I brushed my teeth before bed.
