Materials

Mini-lesson — Helping makes a great story

A helping story is about one moment when you did something kind. Your job is to tell it clearly so the reader understands what happened.

Use this simple plan

  • Start: Who needed help, and where were you?
  • Middle: What did you do? Add 2–3 clear details.
  • End: How did it feel? What changed?

Time order words

  • First, Next, Then, Finally

Quick check: "Did I explain how my help made a difference?"

Drag & Drop — Build each helping story paragraph

Drag the best sentences into order: start, detail, detail, ending.

I helped my friend at school one day. First I saw her drop her pencils on the floor. Then I picked them up and handed them back. Helping her made me feel proud and kind. My mom made soup for dinner. I kicked a ball in the yard.
I remember helping my little brother at home. First he could not reach his book on the shelf. Next I got the book and gave it to him. In the end he smiled and thanked me. My teacher wrote a story on the board. I packed my lunch in the morning.
I helped my classmate during art time. First she looked worried because she lost her crayons. Then I shared my crayons so she could finish her picture. That made both of us feel better. My dog slept under the table. We drove to the beach on Saturday.
I once helped my grandma in the garden. First I saw her carrying a heavy watering can. Then I took it and watered the flowers for her. Finally I felt useful and happy. My cousin sang a song in the car. I built a sandcastle at the beach.
I helped a new student in class. First he did not know where to put his backpack. Next I showed him his hook and desk. In the end he looked calm and ready to learn. My dad washed the windows at home. I rode my bike after lunch.
I helped my neighbor carry groceries. First I saw the bags were too heavy. Then I carried two bags to the door for her. That helping moment made my day better. My teacher read a poem aloud. I found a shell near the sea.
