How to use: Print first for the main practice. Then use the device to repeat activities and save progress.

Objective

I can write clear sentences by using capitals in the right places and choosing the correct punctuation at the end (and sometimes a comma).

Materials

Mini-lesson — Clean sentences: capitals + punctuation

Good writing is easy to read. Two quick helpers are capitals and punctuation. They show where a sentence starts and where it ends.

Capitals

  • Use a capital at the start of a sentence.
  • Use a capital for names (people and places).
  • Write the word I as a capital every time.

End marks

  • Use a period for a telling sentence.
  • Use a question mark for a question.
  • Use an exclamation mark for strong emotion.

Commas

  • Use a comma after a starter: Today, On Monday,
  • Use commas in a list: apples, crackers, and juice

Quick check: "Did I start with a capital? Did I use the right end mark? Did I need a comma?"

Guided Practice — Fix the start and the end

Choose 3 sentences from the Trace menu and copy them neatly on paper. Then use the Tracing Pad to practice words, sentences, and marks.
