Mini-lesson — Clean sentences: capitals + punctuation
Good writing is easy to read. Two quick helpers are capitals and punctuation.
They show where a sentence starts and where it ends.
Capitals
- Use a capital at the start of a sentence.
- Use a capital for names (people and places).
- Write the word I as a capital every time.
End marks
- Use a period for a telling sentence.
- Use a question mark for a question.
- Use an exclamation mark for strong emotion.
Commas
- Use a comma after a starter: Today, On Monday,
- Use commas in a list: apples, crackers, and juice
Quick check:
"Did I start with a capital? Did I use the right end mark? Did I need a comma?"
