Mini Lesson

Peace isn’t just something that happens between countries — it begins with the way we treat each other every single day, in our homes, parks, and neighborhoods.

What is peace?

  • Peace means living in harmony — without fighting, fear, or unfair treatment.
  • Peace can exist between two friends, inside a family, across a whole community, or between nations.
  • Example: When two children disagree about a game but talk it through calmly, that is peace in action.

What gets in the way of peace?

  • Conflict — a disagreement or fight between people or groups.
  • Conflicts can happen because of misunderstandings, unfairness, or unkind words.
  • Conflict is not always bad — the important thing is how we resolve it.

How do we build peace?

  • Use kind words — saying "please," "thank you," and "I’m sorry" costs nothing and means everything.
  • Listen first — let the other person finish speaking before you respond.
  • Cooperate — find solutions that work for everyone, not just yourself.
  • Show empathy — try to understand how the other person feels.
  • Respect differences — people with different cultures, languages, and ideas all deserve to be treated with dignity.

Peace symbols around the world

  • A dove carrying an olive branch is one of the oldest symbols of peace.
  • A rainbow is used in many cultures to represent hope and harmony.
  • Clasped hands represent cooperation and friendship between people.
