Mini Lesson

Long ago, brave men and women set sail across oceans and trekked over mountains — not knowing what they would find. These people are called explorers.

What is an explorer?

  • An explorer is someone who travels to unknown or unfamiliar places to learn about them.
  • Explorers made maps, found new lands, and connected different parts of the world.
  • Example: Christopher Columbus sailed west from Europe in 1492 and reached the Americas.

Why did explorers set out?

  • They wanted to find new trade routes — paths to bring spices, silk, and gold back to Europe.
  • Some wanted to prove the Earth was round or map coastlines no one had charted before.

Famous explorers to know

  • Leif Erikson — A Viking who reached North America about 500 years before Columbus.
  • Marco Polo — Traveled the Silk Road all the way to China and wrote about his journey.
  • Vasco da Gama — Sailed around Africa to find a sea route to India.
  • Ferdinand Magellan — His crew completed the first voyage all the way around the world.
  • Amerigo Vespucci — Explored the Americas; the continents were named after him.
