Objective

I can find and fix common spelling mistakes in simple sentences and short paragraphs. I will use sound-it-out, look-for-patterns, and check-with-a-list strategies to edit my writing.

Materials

Tip: After fixing a word, read the whole sentence to be sure it still makes sense.

Mini-lesson — How do I fix spelling?

  1. Say it slowly. Tap each sound and write the letters you hear.
  2. Look for patterns. Common chunks: tion, ing, ck, igh, oo.
  3. Check rules. c before e, i, y (soft c); k after short vowel (like back).
  4. Use tools. Word wall, dictionary, or your spelling list.
  5. Re-read. Fix one word, then read the whole line for flow.

Trace these tricky words, then write two edited sentences:

  • Focus words: because, friend, school, favorite, animal
  • Example: I like skool. → I like school.
