Objective

Review key phonics patterns and important sight words so reading longer sentences feels smoother and more confident.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Putting phonics and sight words together

In Level 1, you practiced reading many short words like cat, sun, and map. You also met sight words like the, and, and you.

In Level 2, your reading will get longer and more interesting. To be ready, you need to:

  • Use phonics to sound out parts of a word.
  • Remember sight words quickly, without sounding them out every time.

Look at this word: ship.

  • Phonics helps you with sh and ip.
  • You blend them together: “ship.”

Now look at this sight word: was.

  • Was does not follow the usual sound rules.
  • You remember it by heart, like a friend you see all the time.

When you read a sentence, you will see both kinds of words:

  • The ship was quick.
  1. Use phonics to read ship and quick.
  2. Use your sight-word memory to read the and was.
  3. Read the whole sentence smoothly: “The ship was quick.”

Today, you will practice mixing phonics and sight words so your brain can read sentences with less effort and more meaning.

Guided Practice — Review mini-book

How to use this mini-book:

  1. On each page, notice the phonics words (ship, quick, snack, light) and the sight words (the, was, they, could).
  2. Read the page slowly one time, pointing under each word.
  3. Read the same page again a little faster and smoother.
  4. Ask: “Which words did phonics help me with? Which words did I just know by sight?”

After reading, choose one page and highlight or circle all the sight words you see.

Tip: Mix word and sight-word cards and have your child sort them into two small piles: “I can sound it out” and “I just know it.”

Mini-Book: A quick trip in the rain

The ship was at the dock.

The rain came down, but the ship was strong. We had a small snack and waited.

2

They could see the light.

They saw a bright light on the hill. It was there to help the ship find the way.

3

The ship was quick at last.

The storm was done. The ship was quick and smooth on the water. We felt calm.

4

We read the words again.

We read the story one more time. The sight words the, was, and they felt easy now.
