Lesson 21: Write Simple Rhyming Poems

✍️ WRITING (40 Lessons)🟡 C. Creative Writing

← Back to Level 2

Objective

I can write a short rhyming poem with a steady beat and clear rhyme pairs (AA or AABB). I will pick simple rhymes (cat/hat, play/day) and keep each line on the same idea.

Materials

Tip: Say the lines out loud and tap the beat with your fingers. Do the ending sounds match?

Mini-lesson — How do rhymes work?

  1. Rhyme means the end sounds match: sun/fun, star/car.
  2. Keep a steady beat: each line should be close in length so it reads smoothly.
  3. Use an easy pattern: AA (two lines rhyme) or AABB (first two rhyme, next two rhyme).
  4. Stay on one tiny topic: pets, rain, recess, a kite, etc.
  5. End with a clear image or feeling.

Guided Practice — Brainstorm Rhymes on the Pad

Pick a topic (e.g., rain). Brainstorm 4–6 rhyme pairs, then draft a 4-line poem:

  • Rhyme bank ideas: rain/train, play/day, light/kite, cat/hat, see/tree, snow/go
  • Pattern: AABB — Lines 1–2 rhyme; lines 3–4 rhyme.
  • Example (AABB):
The sky is gray before our play,
    We splash in puddles anyway.
The clouds drift low, then bright kites fly,
We laugh and jump beneath the sky.
