Mini Lesson

Think of a day you will never forget — a birthday, a trip to the beach, a visit from a grandparent. Writing about it lets you relive that happy moment and share it with others. This is called recount writing.

Starter — On my special day …

  • Open with "On my special day ," followed by when or where.
  • This tells the reader right away it is a real personal memory.
  • Example: On my special day, we went to the beach.

Use time-order words to tell what happened

  • Use First, Next, Then, After that, Finally to sequence events.
  • Each time-order sentence tells one event in the correct order.
  • Example: First, we built a huge sandcastle.

Add one describing word to each event

  • One strong describing word brings each event to life.
  • Think about size, color, feeling, or weather.
  • Example: Then, we swam in the cool, sparkling water.

Close with a feeling sentence

  • End by saying why it was your special day.
  • Use "It was special because" + your reason.
  • Example: It was special because I was with my whole family.
